THE HAUNTED HISTORY OF THE COUNTING HOUSE

Chartered on January 1, 1900, the First National Bank of Bethel opened its doors at the corner of Plane and Union Streets during a period when a bank charter meant real institutional permanence in a small town. Its first president, William Alexander Julian, went on to become the 28th Treasurer of the United States, appointed by FDR and serving into the Truman administration, a signature that once appeared on the nation's currency, traced back to a desk inside this very building.

The bank's identity shifted along with the industry around it. It became the First National Bank of Clermont County in 1974, merged into Society National Bank of Cleveland in 1980, and was rebranded KeyBank National Association in 1996 before the building's banking chapter finally came to a close. Along the way, the building also housed the local school board's offices upstairs, adding another layer of daily life and institutional history to a space already carrying decades of financial weight.

The bank closed its doors on this business permanently, but many believe the years of money, record-keeping, and quiet institutional pressure never truly left the building.
