The Arts Center at Dunham in Cincinnati, Ohio sits on land shaped by more than a century of illness, war-time care, and human loss. Long before the building became a theater and community arts center, this property served as part of the Dunham Tuberculosis Hospital, one of the earliest municipal tuberculosis hospitals in the United States.
Today, investigators continue to report unexplained activity throughout the building.
THE HAUNTED HISTORY OF THE DUNHAM TUBERCULOSIS HOSPITAL
Opened in 1897, the Dunham Tuberculosis Hospital was established to treat patients suffering from tuberculosis during a time when treatment options were limited and isolation was common.
At its peak, the hospital expanded across more than 115 acres and housed hundreds of patients at a time. Many individuals remained here for extended periods while undergoing treatment, separated from family and the outside world.
But the history of this land reaches even further back.
Before the hospital was built, the grounds nearby were used as a Potter’s Field, where thousands of victims from cholera outbreaks and other diseases were buried, often quickly and without permanent markers.
The property was also used as a Civil War hospital camp, bringing another layer of emergency care, trauma, and loss to the site decades before the tuberculosis hospital opened.
The hospital closed in 1973, but many believe the emotional history tied to illness, isolation, and death never truly left the building.
